Piranha 3D

Piranha 3D adalah film horor/komedi yang menjadi film buat-ulang kedua dari film pada tahun 1978. Film ini ditulis oleh Josh Stolberg dan Pete Goldfinger, penulis Sorority Row dan disutradarai oleh Alexandre Aja. Film ini menampilkan akting dengan kisah berlainan dari aktor dan aktris Jessica Szohr, Adam Scott, Elisabeth Shue, Kelly Brook, Richard Dreyfuss, Jerry O'Connell, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Dina Meyer, Cody Longo, Ricardo Antonio Chavira, Paul Scheer, Ashlynn Brooke dan Eli Roth.

Plot

Matthew Boyd (Richard Dreyfuss) adalah seorang nelayan yang sedang memancing di Lake Victoria, AZ ketika sebuah gempa bumi kecil terjadi, mengakibatkan permukaan danau bergolak dan terjadi sebuah pusaran air. Boyd jatuh kedalamnya dan ia dibunuh oleh sekelompok piranha berwujud aneh dan seram yang muncul dari pusaran itu.

Jake (McQueen) adalah seorang penarik turis saat liburan sekolah dimulai. Ia bertemu kembali dengan mantan pasangannya, Kelly (Jessica Szohr) dan bertemu Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell) seorang pembuat film porno yang aneh, dan juga Danni (Kelly Brook), salah satu aktris Derrick. Derrick meminta Jake untuk menunjukkannya tempat yang bagus di pantai untuk syuting film pornonya.

Malam itu, ibu Jake, Sheriff Julie Forester (Elisabeth Shue), mencari Matthew Boyd bersama dengan Deputi Fallon (Ving Rhames), yang menemukan kapal Boyd. Mereka menemukan mayat Boyd yang sudah rusak dan memutuskan untuk menutup pantai. Pagi berikutnya, seorang penyelam diserang dan dimakan oleh ikan-ikan ganas tersebut.

Jake kemudian meminta 2 saudaranya, Laura (Brooklynn Proulx) dan Zane (Sage Ryan), untuk tetap dirumah sehingga Jake bisa memandu Derrick. Setelah Jake pergi, Zane mengajak Laura pergi memancing ke sebuah pulau kecil di tengah danau. Mereka lupa untuk mengikat kapal dan kapal pun mengapung di tengah danau. Sementara itu, Jake pergi bersama Derrick dan bersama ke The Barracuda, kapal Derrick yang disana mereka bertemu Kelly. Jake bertemu dengan Crystal (Riley Steele), aktris lain Derrick dan kameramen Derrick, Drew (Paul Scheer). Mereka mengambil adegan seks Danni dan Crystal sebelum berpesta.

Julie mengantar sekelompok penyelam seismolog — (Adam Scott), Sam (Ricardo Chavira), dan Paula (Dina Meyer) — yang ingin menyelam ke danau. Novak menduga bahwa retakan yang terjadi akibat gempa itu membuka danau prasejarah. Paula dan Sam melakukan selam scuba ke dalam retakan itu, dan menemukan banyak telur-telur besar yang menutupi sebagian besar retakan itu. Mereka berdua kemudian dibunuh sebelum sempat keluar ataupun memperingatkan yang lain. Novak dan Julie lalu menarik mayat Paula ke kapal dan menangkap seekor piranha, lalu membawanya ke Mr. Goodman (Christopher Lloyd), seorang biolog laut. Ia menjelaskan bahwa piranha-piranha itu adalah spesies prasejarah yang mana spesies itu berkembang di dalam celah tertutup di air selama lebih dari 2 juta tahun.

Julie, Novak, dan Fallon mencoba untuk mengevakuasi pantai tersebut, namun peringatan mereka tidak diindahkan hingga para piranha itu menyerang para turis. Novak kembali ke darat dan datang dengan jet-ski dan shotgun untuk menolong Fallon dan Julie yang ingin membantu para turis menyelamatkan diri. Panggung terapung dipantai runtuh dan semua kontestan dalam panggung itu terbunuh.

Jake kemudian mengetahui keberadaan Laura dan Zane di sebuah pulau dan memaksa Derrick untuk menyelamatkan mereka. Derrick mendapati kapalnya bocor karena menghantam bebatuan, sehingga kapal terbanjiri. Kelly terjebak di dapur sementara Derrick, Crystal, dan Drew terlempar dari kapal. Crystal dan Drew dibunuh sementara Danni mencoba mengangkat Derrick yang sudah tercabik. Jake kemudian meminta pertolongan ibunya.

Julie dan Novak pergi ke kapal Barracuda yang hampir tenggelam. Fallon pergi ke kaca belakang dan membunuhi piranha yang ada di dalam air. Kemudian ia menyelam ke air dan membunuhi para piranha yang berada di dekatnya dengan motor speedboat. Ia pun meninggal, tapi memberikan kesempatan bagi perenang lain untuk keluar dari air.

Julie dan Novak pergi mencapai Jake dan melemparkan tali. Julie, Danni, Laura, dan Zane mulai menyeberangi tali namun piranha menggigit rambut Danni dan menariknya ke air, memakannya. Laura, Zane, dan Julie berhasil selamat. Jake memutuskan talinya. Dengan menggunakan mayat Derrick sebagai umpan, Jake mengikat tali ke dirinya sendiri dan pergi menyelamatkan Kelly. Ia mengikat Kelly ke dirinya dan menyalakan api setelah melepaskan gas yang ada dalam tabung gas cadangan di kapal itu. Saat itu piranha mengerubungi mereka. Kemudian Novak menyalakan kapal setelah melihat Kelly dan Jake sudah siap. Ia menyeret mereka di air dengan kapal yang melaju ke pantai. Mereka pun selamat dan gas itu meledak, menghancurkan kapal Derrick dan membunuh banyak piranha.

Mr. Goodman menelepon Julie di radio. Ia memberitahu bahwa semua piranha yang mereka hadapi itu belum dewasa, dan mengartikan bahwa semua piranha yang ganas itu masih bayi. Novak berpikir di manakah orangtuanya. Seekor piranha besar — setinggi setengah badan orang dewasa — melompat dari air dan menyerang Novak.

Richard Dreyfuss berkata bahwa ia menerima perannya hanya setelah Bob Weinstein membujuknya dengan honor yang besar. Dreyfuss juga mengatakan bahwa karakter yang ia mainkan, ternyata adalah parodi dan sedikit reinkarnasi dari tokoh Matt Hooper, karakter yang ia mainkan di film Jaws. Jaws adalah inspirasi dari parodi yang dimunculkan dalam film Piranha, asal dari film ini. Lagu yang terdengar di radio kapal adalah "Show Me The Way To Go Home", dengan Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider dan Robert Shaw menyanyi bersama di Jaws.

Artis porno Ashlynn Brooke dan Gianna Michaels bermain sebagai kameo di film ini sebagai peserta pesta yang mendapat akhir yang mengerikan.

Produksi

Chuck Russell was originally scheduled to direct the film, and made uncredited rewrites to the script by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, as well as incorporating the original John Sayles script that Joe Dante directed the first time around. Alexandre Aja was selected to direct the film instead. Production on the film was scheduled to begin late 2008, but was delayed until March 2009. In October 2008, director Alexandre Aja stated filming would begin in the spring. He further stated "it's such a difficult movie, not only because of the technicality of it and the CGI fish, but also because it all happens in a lake. We were supposed to start shooting now, but the longer to leave it the colder the water gets. The movie takes place during Spring Break and, of course, the studio wanted it ready for the summer, but if you've got 1,000 people who need to get murdered in the water, you have to wait for the right temperature for the water, for the weather, for everything." Shooting took place in June 2009 at Bridgewater Channel in Lake Havasu, located in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Much of one end of the channel was blocked off for boats, some flipped over and some covered in blood. The water was also dyed red for the shooting. Aja cast for his film project Wild Wild Girls, which played bikini starlets on Lake Victoria. Due to constraints with 3D camera rigs, Aja shot Piranha in 2D and converted to 3D in post production using the reali-D conversion process developed by the company, Inner-D. Unlike other 3D converted films released in 2010, Piranha's conversion was not done as an afterthought, and it represents the first post-conversion process to be well received by critics.

Soundtrack

Lakeshore Records released the soundtrack album of Piranha 3-D which included mostly rap, dance, hip-hop and RnB music. Artists include Shwayze, Envy, Flatheads, Amanda Blank, Public Enemy, Dub Pistols and many more.

Rilis

Piranha 3-D's theatrical release date had been set for April 16, 2010, but was delayed. The film was planned to premiere on August 27, 2010, but in June 2010 was moved to August 20, 2010.[24] The film's first trailer debuted with Avatar. A second trailer was shown in prints of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Inception. It was set to have a panel on 24 July 2010 as part of the San Diego Comic-Con International but was cancelled after convention organizers decided the footage that was planned to be shown was not appropriate. Nine minutes of footage, with some unfinished effects, were leaked onto websites.

The official poster was released June 22, 2010.

Box office

Response to the film with review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes reported that 75% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 89 reviews, with a "fresh" score of 6.3 out of 10, steadily dropping since post-premiere. Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received a mixed average score of 56%, based on 11 reviews.

Empire gave the film three out of five stars, saying "Remember the film you hoped Snakes On A Plane would be – this is it! By any sane cinematic standards, meretricious trash … but thrown at you with such good-humoured glee that it’s hard to resist. It’s a bumper-sticker of a movie: honk if you love tits and gore! Honk honk honk." Christy Lemire, film critic for the Associated Press, said "Run, don’t walk: ‘Piranha 3D’ is hilariously, cleverly gory. Mere words cannot describe how awesomely gnarly “Piranha 3D” is, how hugely entertaining, and how urgently you must get yourself to the theatre to see it. Like, now." HOLLYWOOD LIFE.com called the film "A Campy Masterpiece Of A Movie," adding "If you have an ounce of fun in your body, you will love this movie about killer piranhas that overtake a town of hotties — in 3D!" Peter Hall, of Cinematical.com, said "The gore, the nudity, the language, the gags, the characters-- it's all always on the rise. Just when you think things could not possibly get more ridiculous, that the film has peaked, Aja and screenwriters Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg manage to ram another syringe of adrenaline into its heart." The Hollywood Reporter referred to the film as "a pitch-perfect, guilty-pleasure serving of late-summer schlock that handily nails the tongue-in-cheek spirit of the Roger Corman original" while stating ""Jaws" it ain't -- Aja exhibits little patience for such stuff as dramatic tension and tautly coiled suspense, and there are some undeniable choppy bits...but he never loses sight of the potential fun factor laid out in Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg's script The Orlando Sentinel gave the film one and a half stars out of four, stating that "Piranha 3D goes for the jugular. And generally misses, but generally in an amusing way."

Sekuel

Dengan kesuksesan film ini dari sisi komersial dan kritik, Dimension Films mengumumkan sekuel sedang dalam pengerjaan.
